Arab Weather - The Mediterranean Sea is currently experiencing one of the strongest marine heat waves recorded this year, with water surface temperatures rising to record levels, particularly in the western basin, including the Balearic and Tyrrhenian Seas. This is due to the dominance of static weather systems and a stifling "heat dome" over large parts of the region.

Arab Weather analyses indicate that this intense surface warming increases the likelihood of extreme weather events during late summer and fall, most notably violent thunderstorms and flash floods, due to abundant humidity and high temperatures in the layers near the sea surface.

Heat dome fuels marine heatwave

This abnormal warming is associated with what is known as a "heat dome," a high-altitude atmospheric system that traps hot air and prevents its dispersal, leading to continuous heating of seawater, especially in shallow, enclosed areas.

The Tyrrhenian Sea records a temperature approaching 29°C.

In June 2025, the water temperature in the western Mediterranean exceeded averages by more than 5-6 degrees Celsius, reaching nearly 29 degrees Celsius in some areas.
